Overview
Yerer Mountain is one of the tallest and most majestic mountains near Addis Ababa, located just east of the city. It rises dramatically 10 km north of Dukem (1,950 meters above sea level) and forms a natural curtain to the rising sun.
This ancient mountain features a collapsed volcanic caldera, with a massive rock at its center — the remains of its former chimney. Mount Yerer is recognized as a National Forest Priority Area, rich in biodiversity, culture, and history.
The surrounding Oromo communities are divided by the mountain: the Gelan people live on the west, while the Gembichu and Ada’a clans live to the east and south. According to local lore, ancient Egyptian and Israelite priests and monks once meditated in the canyons of Mount Yere.
