Overview
Lalibela is is Surrounded by lush green mountains and rolling hills. On one side of the village are trails leading up to Abuna Yosef, one of the tallest mountains in Ethiopia standing at 4,260 meters high. The hike up to Abuna Yosef is an incredibly rich cultural experience. Nearly the entire route up is passing by small mountain villages. The interaction with locals and children along the trail makes this a unique hike. The life of many farmers in Ethiopia is difficult, and community trekking is a way to learn more about their way of life, and take a moment to reflect and enjoy the beauty of this country. It is a challenging hike due to the altitude. The peak stands at nearly 4,300 meters and there is a lot of elevation gain in only two day

Itinerary
In the afternoon, visit rock hewn churches of Lalibela. Lalibela is most famous for its churches. Visit 12-13th century rock hewn churches called the Eighth wonders of the world which are still active worship places for major religious ceremony. Considering all of these churches, are carved out of solid rock, each of them has unique architectural features. After breakfast at your hotel trekking over the surrounding countryside. Pass through different villages and crops on different plateaus as you climb higher 4hrs-4:30hrs. Have diner around the campfire, foot massage and chat with locals about everything. An overnight stay with a local family in traditional mud huts (and possibly some entertainment).
Trek to abuneyosef Spend the reminder of the afternoon wandering mountain views watching black Ghelada baboons grazing, bird life and mountain hyrax…Etc. Overnight mud huts.

In another direction trekking downward to direction you will also experience amazing mountain views and visit yemrehane Kirstos 6-7 hour (older than the lalibela churches and a completely different style using the marble and wood) it’s built inside a cave .
